Our Story

Get to Know Sara K

Gone, but not forgotten

On February 11, 2018 Sara passed away from a fentanyl overdose. Each year almost 50K people die from opioid overdose accounting for 7 out of every 10 overdose deaths (Reference). Fentanyl OD rates are rising and is the deadliest of all opioids. Just 1 kilogram of fentanyl contains 250,000 lethal doses (Reference).

However, her death does not define her LIFE. Sara had a kind, playful, accepting and vivacious spirit. She loved her friends and family with her whole heart and made sure they knew it. We aim to show kindness, give to others in need without judgment, and bring awareness to issues in mental health and grief in her honor.

Sara K Foundation is a 501 (c)3 organization dedicated to our mission and serving our community through our “SKF Acts of Kindness.” We support various causes such as homelessness, addiction & recovery, and awareness surrounding issues in mental health & grief.

Monica Magoon - President

Monica Magoon is the mother of Sara who she lost to fentanyl poisoning back in 2018. She has a long history of volunteering and helping others, she was the hot lunch coordinator for Holy Angels School, served as President on the Home and School Association and the School Board. She was Chapter Coordinator for the PKD Foundation offering resources to families struggling with Polycystic Kidney Disease and served on a panel to educate legislators on the disease and the struggles families have when battling it and the importance of post-transplant anti-rejection medication that is not affordable for most kidney/transplant recipients.

Monica, along with her daughter Ashley and son Andrew worked to start and build the Sara K Foundation after a friend of Sara’s stated it would be nice to honor Sara’s memory by building a foundation. Monica, along with her family, took the ball and ran with it, making sure that the foundation represents Sara and her passions along with those needed by the Arizona Community. Besides raising some outstanding children, working together to build this foundation in Sara’s memory, is one of her proudest moments.

She has a passion for helping others and supporting causes her family and Sara believe in, such as supporting the homeless and disenfranchised, awareness and prevention for addiction & recovery, grief & mental health, and sharing her experience to give others hope. She believes that although it is not easy to put yourself out there, if it helps others, it is worth it.
